Home > Our Projects > BorWin6: Strengthening Germany’s Offshore Wind Grid Connection
As offshore wind capacity across Europe continues to expand, the need for resilient, high-capacity grid connections is more critical than ever. BorWin6 is one of Germany’s most significant offshore grid connection projects, playing a vital role in transporting renewable energy from the North Sea to the onshore transmission network. As an offshore wind energy specialist, IOER has been proud to support this landmark project with expert consultancy and personnel services.
BorWin6 is a 980 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore grid connection system developed and owned by transmission system operator TenneT. The project enables electricity generated by offshore wind farms in the German North Sea to be transmitted efficiently to the mainland grid.
At the heart of the system is the BorWin kappa offshore converter platform, where electricity generated offshore is converted from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The power is then transported via subsea and underground cables to an onshore converter station near Büttel, Schleswig-Holstein, where it is converted back to AC and fed into Germany’s high-voltage transmission grid.
BorWin6 is part of TenneT’s established BorWin programme and represents a key step in strengthening offshore grid infrastructure while supporting the long?term transition to renewable energy.
980 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind power
Approximately 235 kilometres from offshore platform to onshore converter station
High‑voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission at 320 kV
Expected to enter operation in 2027
